tuesday tips – you jump, i jump, jack!

during a session, whether it be a family portrait session or a wedding, the most important thing to remember is to do exactly as i say (insert evil laughter here). no, i’m just kidding…kind of. really, the most important thing to remember is that we need to trust each other. being in front of the camera can be very nerve wrecking and uncomfortable; and when you feel like that, don’t you think that uncomfortableness (is that a word?) might be apparent in the resulting images? i think so.  the most important thing to remember when working with me, is that we trust each other. you jump, i jump, jack!

you are going to have to trust me, that when i ask you to do something, it may sound completely silly, but it’s going to look good! for instance, one of my favorite things to do with my clients, is to tell them to laugh. yup. ask anyone who has worked with me and they will tell you that i looked at them completely seriously and told them i wanted them to laugh; right then. the first time i say this, my client looks at me like i’m crazy (which is a bit true;)), but after they realize i’m serious, and decide to trust me, they go for it. before you know it we’re all laughing at our ridiculous laughter, and how absolutely goofy we all feel! those moments are my favorite to capture.

if you do not trust me, i can tell; and for the whole session, i’m going to be trying to get you to have fun and loosen up. when this happens, creativity is stifled on both sides and the end product will reflect that session.

trust me, and i’ll trust you. let’s have fun, let’s play, and let’s take gorgeous pictures of these memorable moments! you jump, i jump, jack! (quick, name that movie!)

too true. And I think this is really true of anything. If you are trying to accomplish something in collaboration with anyone, you need to trust each other’s abilities. It is easy to either sit back and not be involved or committed to a creative process, or feel like you need to direct everything.

if you can trust in someone’s experience enough to feel comfortable in your own role in the creative process, everything turns out MUCH better.

PS I have no idea what movie that is from . . . a little help anyone?

Shoot, I don’t know about the movie, but I do know it’s referenced on Gilmore Girls when Rory sees the Life and Death Brigade for the first time. One of my most favorite episodes ever! I love that picture at the bottom left of the family where the baby is laughing too. SO CUTE!!
