tuesday tip – wedding day lips

if you are close to my age, did you ever wear white eye liner in junior high school? or did you ever try wearing those fake hair pieces you could buy from some stand in the mall, when you were in high school? i’m guilty of both, in fact, i’m sure there are plenty of black mail images of me, wearing two fake curly hair pieces on the sides of my head, floating around on the internet and in hundreds of peoples’ year books (if you know of/own any of the images i’m talking about, please destroy them).

my point is, trends happen. they aren’t bad, but they are temporary; and when it comes to your wedding day look, it would be nice if they could be softened a bit. i use the word “softened” rather then the word “avoided” because i don’t believe they can be avoided, at least in most areas. lips may be the exception to this belief of mine.

when i was in high school, you could tell who the cool girls were by what color of lipstick/gloss they were wearing….and that color was a shiny purple color, a color that kind of made you look like a walking corpse. ouch! i know.

in college, the trend was the nude lip. i was guilty of this one, and actually still like to play with it occasionally. it is, i repeat, a total fad, and a strange one. when you see someone wearing this look, you might wonder how in the world they are going to speak to you because they don’t have a mouth! (but i still like the nude lip with a bit of a pink tint) to see kiera knightley rocking this look, click here.

being a photographer, and having taken make-up classes in college as a performance major, i notice lots of brides slaving away to the lip trends; wearing silvery pinks and purples, just chapstick, super dark red, etc… with all of the lipstick options, what is the best color to wear when you are getting married? is it possible for you to look back on your wedding images and not think something like, “why did i wear that lipstick?!”

the best option, in my opinion, is to go for a color that is similar to your natural lip color. you can also fold your bottom lip down and look at the color on the inside of your lip. that color is usually a little more vibrant.

your wedding day will also undoubtedly be quite a long day, and reapplying lip product will be necessary. but to lessen the amount of reapplication time, you can follow these easy tips:

1. make sure to start with a clean slate. remove all make-up residue.

2. line lips (with a lip pencil that matches the color of your natural lip color) carefully. then, fill the rest of the lip in with the lip pencil.

3. apply your lipstick.

4. dust some loose face powder on over you lips.

5. re-apply lipstick.

i have found these tips to be helpful for lip staying powder, but please know that i don’t believe in make-up application rules. if you know of something you like and find works better, more power to ya!

let us get back to the wedding day lip question; will  you look back on those wedding day photos and cringe when you see what make-up you were wearing? probably. but if you wear a lip color that is close to your natural color and pops a little, you’ll thank yourself for not wearing that shimmery purple stuff. i promise.

OOH! I love the tips feature! I definitely agree that while it’s hard not to be, it’s best to avoid being trendy at your wedding since you’ll be looking at it, well, forever! I really like timeless looks. On my wedding day I wore some chapstick and then just a really subtle gloss. Gloss might not even be the right word. It was like a shimmer stick but not shimmer silver, just made your lips look nice and *moist* ? haha for lack of a better word but not like they were mirrors bouncing the sunshine into everybody’s eyes all day. I just let my natural lip color do the work and it was so much less maintenance than putting on lipstick all day :)

I remember the white eyeliner and purple lipstick, eeeekkk!!! May those trends never come back again, EVER! Thanks for the tips. I need to come over and have you teach me how to do my makeup!

Thanks guys!

I should say that color is still very important! We want to see your lips!

We should all do a make up get together! I think I remember doing a little make-up demo for a relief society enrichment activity…
